Qin Gang: China dismisses its foreign minister following an atypical absence

Less than seven months after he was appointed, China has fired Qin Gang as its foreign minister.

Mr. Qin was thought to be President Xi Jinping's close friend. Wang Yi, the leader of the Communist Party's foreign policy, will fill the position.

Furious rumors have been stoked by Mr. Qin's protracted departure from public view and the government response to it.

The 57-year-old's last recent public appearances were on June 25. His removal was not justified in any way.

His position had been given to him by the president of China in December. His resignation puts an end to weeks of uncertainty, but many issues remain unresolved.

Wang Yi has been chosen to serve as China's foreign minister, according to state news agency Xinhua.

"Qin Gang was terminated as foreign minister."

According to the report, President Xi signed the decree approving the action. Legislators also approved the replacement of Yi Gang as governor of the China Central Bank with economist Pan Gongsheng, according to Xinhua.

In the Chinese Communist Party system, the foreign minister is given instructions on how to carry out foreign policy by a high-ranking official.

Wang Yi is taking up a position that he previously held from 2018 to 2022. He is in a Brics national security meeting in South Africa right now.

One of the most well-known representatives of the Chinese government was Qin Gang. Diplomats, China watchers, and regular Chinese people all kept an eye on his protracted absence.

The very brief official justification provided when he stopped doing his regular duties a month ago and skipped a summit in Indonesia was vague health issues.
