From Athletics Champion to Stone Carver: The Story of Domingas, a Guinea-Bissau Woman Determined to Stay Alive

A talented athlete, Domingas Togna proudly carried the colors of Guinea-Bissau at the IAAF World Championships in Japan in 2007. Sadly, sixteen years had passed since that honorable moment, and her life had taken a very different path, having to become a stone carver to survive.

The bitterness of life healed no one, not even Domingas Togna, who had good times in the world of athletics in Guinea-Bissau. Today, she lives a quiet and modest life in her modest two-bedroom house on the outskirts of Bissau, working daily as a stone carver to earn a living. Beloved by the entire nation for her outstanding performance in the 1,500m events, this woman remains Guinea-Bissau's most decorated female athlete.

This story reminds us of the importance of seizing the opportunities that come our way and appreciating them at their true value. We have to act wisely, and realize that tomorrow is not guaranteed and may hold many surprises. Far from insulting any kind, this story urges us to draw lessons from life and discard what is not necessary.

It doesn't matter which way life takes us, what matters is that we surround ourselves with good people and make informed decisions when necessary. In this way we can build our destiny even in the face of odds.
